The Bay of Islands – the first permanent European settlement and sea port in New Zealand – is an area in the Northland region of the North Island of New Zealand. Located 60 km NW of Whangarei it is close to the northern tip of the country. The bay is the busiest, yet quietest place you’ll ever come to. Lautoka is situated on the western side of Viti Levu, the largest island in Fiji, and just 20 km north of Nadi. The Fiji archipelago lies just to the western side of the International Date Line. Lautoka is Fiji’s second largest city. Though a popular tourist destination, it does not rely on tourism for its economy. Read more about Lautoka, Fiji
Day 6: Suva, Fiji
Suva is the capital and largest city of Fiji, perched on a hilly peninsula between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour in the SE corner of the island of Viti Levu. It is a beautiful tropical city full of colour and diverse cultures. Although it is the only place in Fiji where you will see buildings taller than palm trees, local folk traditions such as fire walks, welcoming ceremonies, wood-carving and the fabrication of tree-bark cloth, remain strong. Hire a taxi for the day or take a tour and enjoy its tall modern buildings which are beautifully balanced by rich traditional colonial architecture.
Day 7: At Sea
Day 8: Apia, Samoa
Apia (pop. 37,000), city and capital of Samoa, is located on the northern shore of Upolu Island in the South Pacific Ocean. Samoa (Western Samoa to 1997) consists of two main islands and four smaller islands. (American Samoa lies 72 km to the ESE.) Apia is on the second largest island. Read more about Apia, Samoa
Day 8: International Dateline – Cruising
Day 8: Pago Pago, American Samoa
Pago Pago Bay (pronounced “Pango Pango”) on the island of Tutuila is the capital of American Samoa, a chain of seven South Pacific isles about 4,000 km south of Hawaii. Due to a massive seaward wall of a volcano collapsing aeons ago and opening to the sea, the harbor is hemmed in by towering mountains.
Day 9 & 10: At Sea
Day 11: Nuku’alofa, Tonga
Nuku’alofa Town is the capital of Tonga, sitting on a narrow isthmus facing the Pacific Ocean to the north, and the Fanga’uta Lagoon to the south. With a population of just 30,000 it is a quiet, sprawling and functional town with buses and internet cafes. It provides a window to a picturesque nation, where tradition and religion are paramount in everyday life. The most visited attraction is the Royal Palace in the heart of town.
Day 12 & 13: At Sea
